96 Back is not an easy artist to pin down. He’s more concerned about texture, fluidity and mood, both in the DJ booth and in his productions, than following the rules of any genre. Everything he does is grounded in a love of club culture and being on the dance floor, from standout cult club hit “Laco” to more out-of-body and protracted full-lengths such as 9696 Dream, Excitable, Girl and Cute Melody, Window Down! Now, he is kicking on with a sound all of his own.
Whether wrecking heads or hooking in hearts across Europe's most respected clubs, no styles are off limits in a 96 Back . The mission is to unite them through timbre and colour, to find similar energies in very different sounds and find clean transitions between very different worlds. But neither is he afraid of taking risks, riding rough and keeping dancers on edge.
There have been various collaborative works over the years with artists like Special Request, Skee Mask, Martyn Bootyspoon and Ice Boy Violet. He’s a mainstay on cult label Local Action, CPU, and his discography is as deep and varied as his genre-defying DJ sets.
His latest full-length, tender, exit, on SVBKVLT distills everything he's learnt into his most accomplished work to date. It taps into the emotions felt during a period of change and a time when the artist has forced himself to step outside of his comfort zone. After many years of searching, 96 Back has found a musical voice that allows him to say what no one else is saying.
